Nick sometimes makes films, but most of time works at a Library. His short works have received a handful of "Best Of" awards and played at festivals such as the NW Film and Video Festival, Ann Arbor, Minneapolis-St. Paul International Film Festival and Bumbershoot 1-Reel. Often characterized for their uniqueness and ambition to challenge common narrative film trends, his work has garnered critical praise from filmmakers such as James Benning and Gus Van Sant. His latest film, a musical, is called "yellow" and was shot and edited on 16mm. It features seven-and-a-half original songs recorded with a live ensemble during filming (i.e.: no dubbing)
Currently he lives with two roommates and their pet cat Nori in NE Portland, Oregon. He enjoys biking, red stripe beer, taking pictures with his Rolleiflex, the coast and writing bio's about himself in the "back of a book cover jacket" vein. |

Nick Peterson's Yellow is a breath of fresh air. Amid the grainy, the gritty, and the grim--in short, in contrast to virtually every other American "first film" out there--Peterson brings the brightness, the brilliance, the wonder, and the mystery of poetry (and song!) to his work. He has the best, the most exciting"eye" of any young filmmaker in my experience. Yellow is visually delicious, acoustically dazzling, and completely original, fresh, and new in its sensibility. And it doesn't hurt that it is deeply perceptive and penetrating as well. It is an eye- and ear-opener of a film--one of my favorite "unknown masterworks" of the past five years. Ray Carney, professor\author
